I have a 2001 Big Bear 400 and was wanting a speedometer kit for it, but my dealer says they don't make them for the Big Bear, only for the 2000 Kodiak. I am almost sure I saw someone on this forum who had the speedo for the Big Bear. Any help would be appreciated.

Go to www.missionyamaha.com they have the kit for the Big Bear. The 2000 model is latest one they list, I'm not sure of any major changes for 2001 Big Bear, not many if any. They list the one for the 2000 for 149.95.

Thanks,

After reading these posts I decided to call my dealer. They charge only $100 for the kit. So, check with your dealer now that someone has given you the part #

I purchased a speedometer for my 2000 Big Bear from my local Yamaha dealer. At first they were not sure if one was available but after they checked out their parts catalog sure enough there it was. I paid $145.00 for mine. You have to remove the right clutch cover and knock out the plug in the back of the cover. The kit gives you a new gasket and a gear to install then you just put the cover back on and the cable slides into the back where the plug was removed. The job takes about 1-2 hours. Good luck. Or, you can go down to your local Walmart/Kmart and get a digital bike speedometer and adapt it to your Big Bear. I put one on a friends, It took about 45 minutes, cost $11.00. They have the following things on them, Speed, Max speed, Avg speed, Time, Odometer and Elapsed time. The display is only about one half inch, but they are quite readable at just about any speed. All you have to do is make sure that you understand that there are two wires in the insulation and extend them both. Go to Radio Shack and get a very strong small magnet. Attach the magnet to the front stub shaft at the differential with silicone adhesive, mount the pick up, and you're ready to go. Total cost less than $20.00.
