LT80 carb flooding and dying - O.T.
#1
Guys,
Got the quads out last week to blow some of the dust off. Haven't ridden for a couple of months and the nice weather prompted us to get out.
Got the daughters LT80 fired up and once again, fuel was shooting out from the overflow hole on the carb. I decided to disconnect the Vacuum tube to see what happened.
The fuel stopped squirting out from the overflow and the machine ran good. Put petcock on PRI and fuel flowed from that hole. Turn to RES and it would stop but the machine would keep running
So we all saddled up and headed out to ride. Less than 5 minutes into the ride, the machine died. I had to put it back in PRI to get it to fire up but put it back to RES (or ON...) to keep it running.
Back on PRI to fire it up, back on RES and another 5 minutes later...died. You get the idea. Did this a half dozen times and we decided to turn back. On the return trip, it died one more and my arms were too tired to pull start it again!! I towed her home.
I was sure it was the petcock. It would let enough fuel into the float bowls when set to PRI but would run out when set on anything else. I figured the petcock was still the culprit.
Bought a new petcock for a Banshee and mounted it up. Looks cool as it is more pronounced then the original. Put it to ON and fuel began running from the vent tube. Pullled and pulled but it would not fire up.
I simply do not understand why the fuel flows out of the overflow tube. I suppose it could be a crappy or faulty needle in the rebuild kit and would not eliminate the fact that I may have made an error on the rebuild.
Getting ready to pull the carb AGAIN, but not sure what direction to go. Daughter "Dad, why don't we just buy a new carb?" May not be such a bad idea!!!!!!
Please advise!!

There is no overflow hole. There is the vaccum for the petcock, fuel inlet, and the carb vent.
Did you block off the vaccum hole when installing the shee petcock?
As you stated, the problem seems to be in the float/needle. If your float has the metal tab (some are plastic), try bending it a lil to put more pressure on the needle.

LT80,
Actually I did not plug the vacuum hole, now that I think about it. Duh! However, would that be the issue?
While looking at the carb from the right side of the machine, the fuel inlet is the lower left-most hole. Above that is the vacuum. The fuel is flowing out of the top right-most hole.
If I turn the valve to Res (tank is a little low on fuel), the fuel flows steady and as fast as that hole will allow fuel to flow out of it.
This is also the carb where I did NOT replace the O-ring behind the main jet. The original broke apart and came out. When I put the new one in and seated the jet, it pinched the O-ring to the point where fuel could not flow.
There are some great LT80 mods on these forums and I'd love to start doing some of them - or all of them!! However, I need this machine to be running consistently better first.
LT80, thanks again!!

The top right hole is the carb vent. It should not have fuel flowing from it.
The missing o-ring benieth the jet is not going to make any difference as far as this problem. That'll prolly be fine.
This has to be a needle/seat issue.
I actually looked at a carb body today. The actuall hole for the vaccum tube to the petcock is very small but it does need to be plugged to avoid it running lean.
Happy to help.
