81 250r giving me problems
#1
well ill start off by saying that it was running great when i first go it like a month ago. But on day i wnt for a ride and i lost my air filter and i didnt know. i ran it until it died and wouldent start. now ive completly cleaned out the carb and its will run good until i get on it for a while and then it will bog out like its starving for gas. so i been messing with the floats and nothing seems to work. Now today i went and got some fresh gas for it 91 octane and mixed it 50:1 and put a new plug in it now it dosent even want to rev. its driving me crazy because i just spent 500 on new fenders and tires. any help will be greatly appriciated.

Sounds like the piston is seizing, running an air cooled R at 50-1 is real lean, you need to take the head off and see if the cylinder is scored, sounds like the damage is already done. Probably put it over the edge running it without the air filter and leaning it out even more.

thats what i was afraid of that was one of my other thoughts, that i was losing compression. I was runnig the hell out of it too. What is the best mixture ratio for this bike, and can i just get it compression tested to see if i need to go spend money on a new pistion. how would i be able to notice a scored cylinder, i took the intake and reeds off and looked inside earlyer and it didnt seem to bad in there. ive got the book on order right now i was hoping that maybe it was going to tell me right were the floats need to be.

50:1 is RAEL lean i run around 30:1 in mine (when it was running)
This sight is all about the air cooled 250R's has a bunch of info and pics (some mine) and the ppl there are definitely on key try it out

I don't run any leaner than 32-1 but that's on a liquid r, my book says my compression should be around 200 but I don't know about an '81. your book will give you all your specs. Unless your carb. was leaking your floats should be fine if anything your jets could be too small leaning it out, but what you are describing sounds to me like the piston is overheating and seizing from running it too lean at 50-1. At least it's a 2 stroke so it's alot cheaper than a 4 poke and probablly needed it anyway. As far as the bottom end I don't know.

Thanks madmel that was a really great sit with tons of information that i was looking for..
Yea i just went ahead and order a new piston and honing tool, yea i figure it is about time for one anyway. But after reading some of the sections on airfools im sure that i might need to take a look at the jetting in my carb also. I just order the clymer book and ill just set it to were the book says and go from there
