Default 1999 polaris sportsman 500 awd trouble???

Brand new speedo, awd light comes on in L, H, and R with key on. When bike is running Awd light will not come on. Also when the bike is put in H or L the R light on the headlight pod comes on. The bike also stalls in reverse without the reverse override switch pushed in.

sounds like maybe the trans switch may be messed up, or the override switch. just a guess.

Default awd problem, also bike modified

Also this bike has been snorkled. The radiator sits on the front rack, hence the main headlight pod has been bypassed and hooked into two spotlights. could this affect it operating properly?

Default awd trouble 1999 Polaris Sportsman 500 (snorkled)

Ok now after further review. With the key in the ON position, bike not running, I slide the awd switch to on and put in any gear. Awd lights up, I then start the bike in gear and it stays lit. As soon as I switch the gear from let's say L to H the light goes off and will not come back on. Keep in mind my reverse override is tiewrapped down cause if not the bike dies when put in reverse! Wow what a nightmare. I tried testing the 4wd the other day by lifting it and putting it on jackstands. No matter what only the rears turned. I tried sticking it in the sugarsand by holding front brake, while burying the rear tires, couldn't stick it. I just don't know if the red awd light is just not coming on to annoy me or what.

Thanks for any input,

Lenny

it sounds like you have a few wiring messes. the override button not being pushed in will not just stall the bike. the awd button in the on spot will not make the awd work in reverse w/out pushing the yellow override button. this is why some people bypass the switch. so w/ the awd on you dnt have awd at all in any gear?

Unplug the black wire from the speed limiter box, follow wires from override button to the box. Also sounds like shifter switch is bad, I have wired around these, you have to supply power to the two wires that go to the front hubs, find a hot wire on the circuit board and run a jumper wire from it to the hub wires, the awd switch will still turn it off and on, Kinda hard to explain, hope this helps.

Default awd

Correct, no awd in any gear when running. Awd lights up in all gears with key on not running. When the bike is running can't make awd light up. Just to clarify, the bike dies when put in reverse only, without the override switch on.
