Default 1984 Honda 200ES runs like crap

I just aquired a 1984 Honda 200ES Big Red and it runs like crap. It spits and farts and wont idle, I have to crack the throttle to keep it running. I installed a new plug, cleaned the carb, checked valve ajustment and they are all ok. The main needle in the carb was set to the wrong position so I reset it to the normal altitude positon. Still runs like crap. It seems to idle better with the choke on. I can drive it down the road without a problem but idle is the issue. Any help would be great.

I know you said that you cleaned the carb. but running better on choke is a sign that the pilot jet is clogged, if I were you I would get a rebuild kit.

Welcome to the forum Jackball42!

I agree with sdm111, your pilot jet is most likely still clogged..could you see light thru it after cleaning it?

you can get one through parts unlimited for 20 bucks or so..... a rebuilt kit that is.... will come with all jets as well as a float needle, which you could probly use at this point anyway

Hello atc's! I have a problem with my 1984 Honda 200es Big Red. The motor runs fine, for about 5 min. then fouls out the sparkplug with exesive black carbon. I can clean it off and it will run another 5 mins. and do the same thing. I have already cleaned the carburetor and made sure all ports and pilots are clean. I have even swaped carbs with another 200s, and the same thing happens... Any ideas of what to do next??

If the needle wasn't in the normal altitude possition, " #3 ", then the main pilot is probably not the correct one either. You should have a "#95" and you probably don't. The main port is the little "cap screw" on the bigger of the two pilots inside the carb. good luck
