Default 99 sportsman 500

I have a 99 sportsman 500 that i just got, i noticed that the AWD light will come on but the front wheels do not pull, i have been reading around and saw that if the speedo does not work that the AWD will not work either, well my speedo doesn't work. My ? is this, does the speedo problem apply to the 99 models, or is to old? if it does apply, is there an overide i can do to make sure it is it? Also i noticed that the low range stopped working tonight, high is fine so is reverse, do you have any imput on that? thanks

i have a 99 sp 500 and my speedo quit working but all four still spin... my light on my switch works but my speedo dont... maybe check your wires from handle bars to where they lead

also a wire to check on for the speedo is on the right side if your sitting on the quad... somewhere by the break caliper.. im not sure i havnt looked at mine yet either mine is in the shop getting clutch buttons

also check the hub fluid... maybe your armature plates are bad in the hubs... if the hub fluid is dirty then change it and try that... just a couple suggestions..

there is a allen head on the hub... put it in N... and take the screw out... and roll it ahead or backwords to the 9 and 3 position.. fluid should then come out.. if it looks nasty change it...the hubs are magnetized and need good fluid to run.. thats the cheapest place to start and that should be done 2 times a year... i have gotten really good with the clutch system and if you wanna check you armature plates if it still dont work send me a pm and i'll walk you threw it... my 99 is a solid quad i wouldnt trade it off.. maybe buy another but i am gonna keep mine... let me know

You realize that the Sportsman AWD works a little differently, right?

The front wheels will not engage until the rear wheels slip...I believe about 1/5th of a turn or something like that.
