New member 1st post question about "set-up" new quad
#1
I just ordered a new jet-moto cobra 110 [ renegade], i should have it in a week or two.
I'm having fun searching old threads for info but i thought i'd first say hello.... and second ask a couple questions.
what do you all reccomend for setting this quad up? precautionary measures etc etc? i've heard about loctite and am wondering what bolts need to have that???
also what oil do these things take in the engine? 10w 30? i'd like to change it shortly after it's ran a bit.
also anything else you can think of to warn me or help me get a long fun life from this quad, i'd really appreciate it!
thanks, Nate

welcome! you have done your homework! Loctite and more Loctite, do every bolt and nut you can possibly do, Oil , Valvoline ATV Oil 10W-40 has worked good for me on the redcat I change it every 10 hrs or so. electrical grease all the wire connections they dont like water, I even sealed the outside of all the plugs with liquid electrical tape (over kill who knows) but i havent had any electrical issues on any of the 3 I had. Im sure more will chime in with more.

In case you haven't looked yet, Loctite is pretty expensive. And there are several kinds. If you go the the Loctite route use Loctite 242 (its blue). There are others in the loctite family that will not come loose once set. The bolts will break first.
Harbor Freight has some thread locker called MXLOC 71. It comes in a big 50 mL bottle for $10.00. It locks stronger than Loctite 242, but is still removable. The same size bottle of Loctite 242 is around $40.00.
Also, look at all the castle nuts that have cotter pins. Make sure the nuts and cotter pins are engaged when tightened up. On my quad (not a Jet Moto) I found that many critical nuts could come loose many turns before the cotter pin kept them from falling completely off. I spaced the nuts out with flat washers so that the cotter pins were engaged with the nuts, and would stay tight the way they are supposed to.
I assume this 110cc machine is for kids? Most important - above and beyond all else - YOU have to be responsible for checking this machine out thoroughly before every ride. A child isn't going to have the mechanical or verbal skills to tell you that the "brakes don't feel right", or "it's steering funny today". They are just going to blindly ride with a big smile until something fails big time.
This oil thing has me really puzzled. I read in many forums about the "shipping oil" that come with chinese quads. I've even heard the incredible claim from some that this oil is made from fish. When I bought my quad I received written instructions from the dealer on the proper way to break in the new engine. The first thing in the instructions was to not believe what you read on the internet about changing out the oil. The installed oil was a special formula for breaking in the engine. It said to run the engine one hour at various speeds but at light loads, then change it out for 10W-40 motorcycle oil. Then change the oil again at 5 hours, and every 15 hours thereafter.
I don't know what to think. I followed the instructions, my quad has hundreds of hours on it, and still runs fantastic. Is my dealer special, and had special oil installed for his shipments from china? Or is the internet full of misinformation? I don't know. You be the judge. But fish oil? Its amazing what some people will believe.

So your saying the oil companies formulate a break in oil for atv's? Im betting its just a very low grade oil from china ! who knows what its made of! but change the crap out fairly soon its garbage (smell it)! wait it does smell like tuna kinda j/k.
lynn brought up good points on them castle nuts they deffinatly dont know where to drill holes for cotter pins on them.

Welcome to the forum over rev, Put blue loctite on all the smaller bolts, screws etc...if it uses a phillips screw driver or a 8 or 10 mm wrench put loctite on it...if it holds on a bracket or plastic loctitie it...
Lynn Edwards.....
I heard the fish oil claims over 35 years ago with Japanese Motorcycles...The rumor was that the Japanese didnt waste their petroleum oil on products not staying in their country...Was it true? Not sure but I changed my oil before using a new Japanese MXer...All the oil...shock oil and fork oil too...The shock and fork oil always smelled fishy the first time you changed it...
Do the Chinese do the same thing? Dont know about that either but Id guess the "break in oil" clamis are just that...Sort of like the top speed claimed in most ads...With all the low budget components on a Chinese ATV doesnt it seem sort of ridiculous that they put a special oil in them? I would change it before even starting the engine and did with all of mine...
I use Valvoline 10w040 in all my Chinese and Honda air cooled thumpers..

thanks everybody for welcoming me!
yes, the quad is for kids, haha
i'm super pumped to get this quad! i'll spare everyone the long story but i've been wanting to do this for a very long time and finnaly found [ i think, haha] a super chick i really see myself spending a very long time with, who has 3 kids. i'm taking a bit of a gamble, i know..... i spent the money i had saved for new tires for my truck on this quad. i personally don't see it as a gamble at all.... i can't wait to introduce them to the fun of wheeling! there are way to many positives!
i will absolutly follow all your advice on the above mentioned items! i love tinkering and take pride in maintaining all my vehicles.
here is what i've been thinking as far as a must do list.
1. drain the carb for possible contaminates in the bowl/ tank
2. dielectric grease on accesible connections
3. change the oil right away with 10/40 bike oil... then again after the first ride
4. put loctite on everything!
5. keep my big yap closed and let the kids just have fun!
6. shim up all castle nuts to engage cotter key
7. i know i'm forgetting something, haha
thanks for the reply's guys! if there is anyother advice you'd like to share, i'm all ears! including how to keep my mouth shut..... and make sure the kids have fun with there first experiance with quads.
i really want them to enjoy this toy... preasure free, what do you guys feel is the best way to start them off?
btw, if they are not interested in it, i'll be ok with that [ internally bummed for sure]
there mom will be there of coarse but...... do you have any tips for me to get things off on the right foot? thanks again everyone! Nate

As for getting off on the right foot...buy the kids each a helmet and never let them ride without one...long sleeve shirts are a good idea too..."Safety first" will go a long way with mom..

you wiil thank me later.the oil in it is just crappy shipping oil. Seth 03
