Default 500 rebuild

How difficult/expensive is it to rebuild a 500 Sportsman motor? It rattled, had no power, coughed and died. Oil was way overfilled. I have experience with two stroke motors buyt have never messed with a 4 stroke. What is the first steps to diagnosing what is wrong with it? It turns over fine and isn't making the typical two stroke metallic noises that signify piston cylinder issues. Compression check? What shoud the compression be?

Any other ideas?

Thanks

sounds like maybe a thrown rod. the first thing i would do before trying to get the motor out is take the jug off and check the crank and rod out (the cases will have to be split in order to fix it tho)

Ballpark cost at a dealer? I totally trust the dealer but would like to have an idea whether to just dump this thing or pay to have it fixed. I already have a new 800 Big Boss.

Here's an email address to a shop that rebuilds Polaris engines. I saw it on the Polaris forum.
