Default 2002 Sportsman 500 HO Coolant Leak

Hello,

I started my 4 wheeler today and after it idled for a few minutes I noticed coolant leaking. I got under the machine and found where its coming from. Where the radiator lines tie into the engine block there is a 1/4" hole under them and that is where the coolant is coming from. Does anyone know why the coolant would be coming out of this hole?

Thanks in advance

Mike

the part is called a "mechanical seal." You'll have to have a special tool to remove it on a 500 (600-800 doesn't need any special tools). Don't try to remove it with a screwdriver.. if you scar the aluminum you can create flow problems for the coolant. When I had a 500, i'd take it to the dealer disassembled and they'd usually pull it for me and put the new one in with the machine in the back of the truck... charged me $10. Ask your dealer.. hopefully they'll do the same. Seal is about $50.

Why dont you need any special tools for the twins? What does it take to do it on those? I have a 2005 sp 700 twin that has a small amount comming out of it now and then.
