Default 04 Sportsman With Fan Issues

Just picked up a 04 Sportsman 600 for a great deal, but the previous owner told me that it had fan issues and had mentioned it was noisy. I never heard it myself, I've ran the bike a bit and it never turned on. So I unbolted the fan and removed to hook it up striaght to a battery, fan ran fine and did't make any noise. I checked to see if there was and voltage at the connection and there was, hooked the fan back up and it would't run. Any suggestions.

Also when I start the bike up I get a flashing wrench for about 30 seconds and goes away, whats that all about.

Is there anything I should know about these bikes, some preventive matiance?

The fan having voltage and and not turning on when the fan is ok seems like it could be an ecm problem. There was a recall those years. Or it could just be a bad ground or something small. The flashing wrench is the oil change reminder the owners manual will tell you how to reset it. As far as ererything else goes keep the oil changed, zerks greased, radiator washed, and air cleaner clean and you should be good to go!

Yea electronic control mod. They do some wierd things. Fans don't turn on at all, fans stay on all the time till the battery dies (mine did), and dash saying motor is overheating when its not even up to operating temp yet.

sounds to me like the temp switch(rad fan switch, thermal switch) very common on polaris. not sure if yours is in the rad or located on the engine. easy to replace.

There is a temp sensor on the screwed into the rad it tells the fan when to turn on or off, There is a temp sensor on the motor as well but it only works the overheat warning light.

Sounds to me like the temp sensor. Although I would call the dealer with the VIN# to see if you machine has the ECM recall.

I've ridden with guys that have the same prob with other machines. They got a kit to wire the fan to a toggle and just turn it on manually which seems to work good.
