Default 01 Sportsman 500 HO CV JointRemoval Help

Hi,

I am currently trying to take off the front cv joint. I have it down to where the cv joint connects to the joint and then the pumpkin. I see the small hollow pins. Am I supposed to knock those out? I tried with a few punches and broke them one off inside. Am i supposed to take off the snap ring and then the boot and then is there a snap ring? Any help would be great. Thanks

yea pb blast the **** outta it,... you have to knock that pin out.. then its gonna be hell but you have to pound out the shaft in between the shaft and diff.... i have a 99 sp 500 and i didnt have much room... i acutally used 2 diffrent pickle forks and sprayed it down with pb over night and pounded the hell outta it... they are usually rusted in there pretty good... after getting it to come out a little but i had to cut like a inch off one of the pickle forks to get a wider bite... good luck... its a fight, hope you win!

also becarful.. that diff is aluminum, i didnt break it but i put a couple nice gouges in it..

I tried a pickle fork between the different and where the shaft/knuckle goes in. I tried to pound that out and it didn't move. I need the pin out first or can I just knock the whole thing out? What did you use for the pin?

no you have to get the pin out first... i used a smaller punch that fit in the hole but not in the hollow pin... you need to knock it out not expand it.. you know?

its a pain... i sweat and swore a bit.. and every shop i called to ask what the hell they used... they said it was a pain in the *** too..

its rolled sping pin which is hardened steel so make sure you have a good soild punch that matches the outside dia of the pin as he mentioned. penetrating oil helps alot when it has a chance to soak in over some time.

I use a bolt(or an old Chevy 350 pushrod) a little smaller than the diameter of the hole to get the pin out. It will take some wrestling but you can get the shaft out of there. Be sure to coat the splines with never-seize before re-assembly!
