Default 1996 Sportsman 500 CV joint

I need to replace a front CV boot on my sprotsman. I have the drive shaft off and on the work bench. How the heck do I get the drive shaft to separate from the CV joint? The service manual says the pull "sharply". Well, I have pulled, hamered, smashed, said many bad words, etc but I can't get it appart. At this point I'm sure I've drastically shortend the life of the joint itself.

Thanks in advance, Jon

I'm not sure if it's the same for a 96, but there should be a circlip just below the CV housing. Once you get it spread apart, the joint will separate fairly easy with a few hits from a hammer and brass punch. See stendori's sticky post, and you will see what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the reply but it must be diff for a 96. I did see the sticky thread at the top of the page but there is no recessed area for a circlip like the newer atv's.

"pulling sharply" is to get the cv joint shaft assembly out of wheeler, which you have already done and i beleave yours being a 96' has U joints on the inside and not cv joints(not sure about that on the older bikes). if its the same set up as the newer ones and it's the outside(wheel side) there is a inside C clip that you can not see very good and if theres grease still in the joint then it makes it twice as hard. don't look for regular ears that are onthe regular C clips as there is none. i think i put a picture of the what it looks like on the sticky.

Well, I got it apart last night. It seems the sticky refers to rear CV joint removal. For the front I found a tech tips section here: CV Restoration. Basically you put the drive shaft in a vise, take a hammer/ big punch, put the punch on the bearing race right near the drive shaft splines, and pound the joint off the shaft. I had the hit it 4-5 times HARD!!!!

On my 93, I put the wheel end of the axle in the vise (using nylon vice gripers) as to not dammage the threads, put a ball joint remover (pickle fork) over the axle at the ball joint end, and smacked the ball joint remover with a bfh once, and the axle popped out of the cv joint. Make sure that you take at least one side of the cv boot off first, otherwise, it will keep the axle from comming out.
