Going to look at a 200 Xplorer 400 4x4: Wt to look for?
#1
This Saturday I'm going to look at a 2000 Polaris Xplorer 400 4x4. Its fairly cheap (should be able to get it less than $1k).
Owner sas it runs just rough, and that it sat up for a long time. I figure it'll need a carb rebuild and maybe a new top end. Is there anything I need to look out for?
He also said, while it starts with the electric start, there's something wring with the pull cord, it doesn't engage.
Anything else i need to look at? Any way to tell if the trans is in good shape with a short ride?
I've read great things about this 4wheeler, so I'd love to be able to pick it up and bring it back to life.
thanks!

you could check the counterbalancer oil before you start it ,to make sure there's no antifreeze in it,if there is it's time for a bottom end ans seals also.
check front yokes on the differential, should pretty tight .
rear bearing carreier and swing arm bushings

thanks. How do I check the counter balance oil? And by front yokes, do you mean for the axles? or streering?
I talked to him again today to confirm when I'm coming to look at it, and asked a few more questions.
He said it'll start and idle, though a little rough, and it goes into gear just fine, but dies when you give it gas. He said the belt was still in good shape and not loose or anything. He said before it got put up, it was in good working order, and the trans was/is in great shape, never any prolems going or putting in gear.
He did say the brakes would need some TLC though I would think, some fresh pads and fresh fluid bled thru would be all it needs.
He did say the previous owner premixed instead of relying on the auto mixer. I'll probably check it out and go back to using it.
