04 Sportsman 700 - front axle shafts

I think I am correct but aren't they held in with a split ring and supposed to just slide out? I have pulled and pulled, beat, everything and can't seem to get the out. I am needing to replace the u-joints. Tahnks!

I have usually had to soak it for days with spray lube so that the split ring comes loose. They have a tendency to rust and make it hard to remove. It seems weird but all of a sudden it will just pop out when you are tugging on it. Good Luck...

Before I starting taking mine apart, I was thinking the SAME thing with the play. Once I got the axel out I realized there isn't the play you think there is. I sprayed Kroil oil in the splines for 2 days and made a slide hammer and whammo it came out. IMO Kroil oil is the best out there. I work at a power plant and we buy ALOT of this stuff. Are you replacing your axel? If so where did you find one? Found em on eBay but always lookin for a deal.
Thanks

I was just replacing the inner u joints and I did get those on ebay, $50 for both u joints. You said you put Kroll on the splines. Does the axle slide off the spline coming out of the differential or does the spline slide out of the differential? I assumed the spline slid out of the differential but since you said you put Kroll on the splines I am now guessing the spline stays in the differential and the U joint slides off it?

Well now I have looked at the parts diagram and see that the axle spline does slide out of the differential. Did you just spray the Kroll around the axle next the housing and let it works its way inside?

Yep..For me I just kept spraying some in the am then at night and then the same thing the next day. I also tried to tip the machine a little to help it soak into the spline area and the housing.

Exactly....any good penetrant oil will "creep" it's way into things and will "loosen" rust. I could go on my soapbox about " lubes" and penetrants but I won't. WD40 IMO is nothing more than a tool cleaner!!

I pulled & pounded on mine until I thought it would never come out . I put the end of a pry bar (shaped like a wedge) between the lip on the shaft & the housing & tapped the bar in a couple of times & it popped out like nothing. I spent half a day pulling on the darn thing & it popped out with just a couple taps of the pry bar.
