06 Sp 450 solenoid problem?
#1
Please help me confirm my diagnosis. No start, no click, no nothing with the key. Starts right up with pull start. Checked key switch, have power to the white wire that goes to the solenoid when I turn the key, also have 12 volts at the solenoid end of that wire. When I jump the two large terminals on the solenoid the starter spins but the bendix doesn't engage. Don't you need to involve one of the two smaller wires for the bendix to kick in? What is the proper way to test the solenoid? Battery is fully charged and ok. Thanks

Went back out there and played with it some more and now when I jumped the two big terminals it did actually start. Not sure why it just spun the starter without engaging before. Also have voltage at the other small (upper) terminal while turning the key. I'm assuming that the lack of any clicking from the solenoid indicates failure?
Thanks

Sounds like a compound problem, if the starter spins but the motor does not turn over, that can only be a bad bendix drive.

If you read my second post you will see that my bendix is working fine, not sure why it wasn't the first time but it is now. I just have no click or anything at the solenoid. I do have power from the key switch to the solenoid. Thanks

That bothers me also,if it was yours solenoid you think it would make a click ( But maybe Not). Have a friend hold a volt meter on the solenoid connection, when you hit the start button you should see a jump .
It does sound like the solenoid is you best bet though.
Good luck.

Here,s what the book says about testing the solenoid.
with key off.
Use a ohm meter set at RX1
Disconnect the small red/white wire from from solenoid.
Connect one meter lead to the small red wire attactched to solenoid, and the other lead to frame.
The resistants reading should be 3.4 ohms any higher means its shot.
