Default Need your help please - 04' 500 Sportsman

Hey I am new to the ATV scene, about to get a 04' 500 Sportsman. The deal is "locked" I guess, gonna pick up a 500 Sportsman within the next week. The motor has low hours since last rebuild, runs great, but the owner says it has "rearend" problems and he can't figure it out. I'm trading a Honda 90 Fourtrax I just got this week for $175 and got it running. Straight across. I was told by a friend that its a stupid trade because the 500 sounds like it has tranny problems and if I can't fix it then I won't be able to sell it and he goes on and on about how stupid it is but it makes me mad because he has no clue what he's talking about, he just listens to his brother talk and believes everything he says. I'm not sure what the problems could be with the 500 but can anyone relate to this somehow or give me tips? Or tell me their opinion on the deal? The guy selling the 500 was asking $1500 by the way as it is

welcome to the forum. it seems pretty strange that an 04' 500(the most reliable engine there is)just got rebuilt w/ low hours on it. makes me wonder if it maybe got swamped then ran and took out the engine form the water. but if i understand your trade right and you only have $175. into this, it's a steal on just parting it out. i would ant to drain the oil or least pull the dip stick on the tranny to see what it lools like as it might be minor or major. imo

Thanks. Yeah technically I'm only paying $175 but just wanted to see what peope who own ATVs would say. I need to replace the float set in my Fourtrax before Sunday, which is the day I'm trying to get the Polaris. Thanks and keep the posts coming.

I bought a '99 SP 500 a while ago which had several issues, including a trannyproblem according to the extreamly honest seller.

1 pcs.new bellcrank on the linkage (USD 10-12), some adjusting and the whole tranny-issue was history :-)

I hope its that simple on your SP too!

K.
