Oil in gearbox
#1
My sons have two quads, GIO, this type has a gearbox on the back axle that changes from forward to reverse, I am very new to quads and when my son said it was making a banging noise and locks up I took a look and noticed that there is a bolt with a hose in the top
do you or is there suppose to be oil in this gearbox, if so, what type do I put in
any information would be great
Thanks

Motor oil is a very weak gear lube because it has very poor shear resistance properties compared to an actual lube made specific for protecting gear to gear contact, like in a motorcycle type transmission or ATV gearbox. That is why when you drain a gearbox with motor oil that has some use it looks grey and muddy with metallic sediments... the motor oil has been shredded by the gear mesh and beat to snot so has lost it's protective properties and you see the gear wear evidence.
We run synthetic gear lubes, like a Belray or Amzoil 2000 in all our gear boxes and it drains out looking close to the same as it did when we poured it in, no metallic sediments.

Thanks for the info, I put motor oil in and it runs smooth, but I will drain out and replace with Amzoil 2000 - still having the problem when he switches it to reverse it sometimes locks up or makes a harsh bang and runs ruff

Some Updates
I took off the 3 inch by 3 inch plate from that rear gearbox to see what the crunching and banging was and all I can see is about a 1 and 1/2 inch round metal thing that looks like a small pisten (it ant I know but it looks like one), and two chewed up rings that came out of there, now it looks like the rings may have been like a bearing or something because now the round metal thing moves all about in the 3 inch opening
anyone familure with this type of bike -> GIO giovanni, that knows what this is, this rear gearbox is for changing from forward to reverse has a shifter cable on top that runs up to the handle for changing it, it is just a square box that the rear axle runs through and the chain sproket is on
are the parts in that replaceable or do you have to replace the whole gearbox?
here is a picture, it looks just like this, even thou this one says yomoto, my kids say GIO on the motor, but looks exactly the same as this one
