Default Trail Boss 250 engine revs up in reverse??

I have a 1992 Polaris 250 Trail Boss that the engine revs up really fast when I put it in reverse. Even without having my thumb on the throtle. If you don't have your foot on the brake it will shoot backwards. I don't have any history on how or when it started or anything. I just bought this thing, and it needs a lot of fixing. Any ideas on why it is doing this....

Could this have something to do with the reverse limiter thats causing it to rev up. I have this atv apart now waiting for parts (Primary clutch and starter) so I can't check anything out until I get it back together. This is my first expierence with working on a 4 wheeler so I know very little about them..Thanks

the override shouldn't have any thing to do w/ the reving up as unless something is hitting the throttle cable when it's being shifted to cause it to stretch the throttle open? imo

Thanks for your reply stendori but I have checked and nothing is hitting the throttle cable. I'll have to get the 4 wheeler back together before I can check it out more.
Anybody else have any ideas??

I agree that something must be hitting the cable as it get put into reverse. Looking at pix of my 2000 TBoss with the whole body off for some thurough maintenance a while ago, I see that the throttle cable comes down on the left side. The cable is WAY clear of the shifter linkage on my bike. I don't have any pix of my 1995 TBlazer 250 taken apart, (its up at cottage right now) so I don't know where the cables are in relation to the shifter, but in your case I can't think of any other explanation.

Let us know whats going on with yours.

Well I can't think of any other explanation either. But I almost positive that the shifter is not hiting the throttle cable. I'm waiting for parts before I put this thing back together. I just bought it a few days ago and it was like this when I got it. It needs lots of work. I'll let you all know if I get it figured out.

a quick question for all, now, i got a 2001 TBlzr, now i'm asking because i don't know, on the reverse limiter, when the override button is pressed and allows you more throttle to back up faster, is that some kind of sensor/controller that "opens" a valve or jet to the carb to feed it more fuel? i haven't taken my TBlzr apart yet to look, everything's so crammed together i can't see up in there and i don't have a book on it yet, but i'm trying to make sense of how the override functions. that "maybe" could be the problem here(i.e. opening up too much). Don't Know for sure. food for thought though.

I can't find my service manual for my TBoss to look it up, but I'm almost sure that the reverse limiter is going to be electrical in the ignition. Reving up in reverse too high will cut out the ignition, but pushing in the button will by pass the limiting system and allow it to rev higher.
