Thanks for the quick response.....I got the bike used, and don't know that the cdi unit was bad...It did have a starter clutch that needed replaced, as such, I hadnt seen the bike run. The bike did the same thing with the original CDI unit. It is possible they are both bad, but hoping for some other ideas....

i bet its a bad battery. my friend did all kinds of electrical diagnostics on his warrior to find out that it was a bad battery. When batteries get tired they cant make a spark under the load of turning over the starter so when you let off and the starter is winding down and not under a load, sometimes it can make a spark. try a different battery if you can, or have yours tested

Hmmmmm. never heard that!!! I know honda had an issue with 95 and 96 trx 300 with bad cdi,s They had them made by another distuber and the ground was made incorrect and the atv,s in the years i mention would fire after starter button was repleased we did reground neut.switch and this help BUT then honda decided that the cdi was wrong after we did warranty on the neut.switch reground and they did research and foundt out that cdi was the problem and recalled them models. You may have an ground in harness thats bad! I guess i would make an temporay ground to harness to batt ground, then if don,t help ground engine to frame.... Let,s see whats happens... Get back with us...
