Need info on sportsman 800 twin efi

I just bought one today with no miles on it. Its a 2006 I believe since it says 08-26-2006 under the front. It could be a 2007 I guess???????? anyways the guy (seller who used to own a shop but lost it in a divorce) could not find the key and I had to have one made at the local locksmith shop. This key turns the lights on but will not start the Machine. Is there something i'm not doing right to start this up and hear it run. Are the keys chipped (electronic key)???? Any help would be appreciated.

No chips in the keys and I'm assuming you're turning it all the way clockwise. Check the battery/connections first. If it's low then it will need charging/replacing. Check your fuses and connections. Worst case could be a bad ignition switch or starter issue.

it seems kind or weird that this guy sells you this bike which has no miles but has no key?? if the key you had made turns the switch then it would start. did you get the owners manual w/ the bike? if so read in th book how to put the bike into the dianostic mode to check the voltage in the battery. just a thought, but that bike won't start in gear w/out pulling the hand brake or it needs to be in park or neutral.

I purchased a brand new Battery and I have a new ignition switch on the way. The locksmith used a blank key (no cuts in blank) and it turned the switch. Like I said this key will turn the dash on but I'm wondering if it is not turning all the way to start because of the tumblers in the locking mechanism arent in the right places? Who knows? I'll see for sure when the new ignition switch comes in. He (the seller) said I can return it if I cant get it to run. It may seem shady to all of you but this was a legit sale. He was just unloading his inventory before the soon to be Ex wife puts the pinch on him. Thanks for the help guys =) I guess if the ignition switch dont work i'll take it in and get raped for the diagnosis =(

As stated before, If it's in gear it will not start unless your holding the brakes. Be sure of that. I've been on the trail before and shut it down in gear and later can't restart it. And the DUH! kicks in. Makes you feel pretty stupid sometimes. LOL
