The factory starter for my 400 xplorer was quoted at 350.00. I found an atv parts dealer on line ( polarispartsdealer.com) that advertises a starter for 59.00.
Anyone bought an aftermarket starter?
Where do you recommend buying parts online?

I think the factory starter price is a bit out of line. Rope start looks pretty good at that price........

 

Is your starter not rebuildable? Most of the time all they needs are brushes and a good cleaning and they're good to go. Easy job.

Either way...rebuildable or not. "DB Electrical" on Ebay has the rebuild kits and starters for about as cheap as your going to find. Pretty good quality for the price.

I would try to clean yours up first. I was in the same position last year and thought I needed a new starter. Since mine was already bad, I figured I had nothing to loose by opening it up and taking a peak.

Once I got in there, I found lots of mud and other garbage. Also, one of the brushes was stuck and not making good contact. After cleaning it out good and spraying a little wd-40 on it, the starter was as good as.... a really old starter, but it worked again and has been working fine for the last year.

It didn't cost my a penny to open it up and even if I did break something, I was already planning on buying a new one anyway, so no big loss.

 

buy a rebuild kit from one of the ebay stores. what are they 15 dollars vs. 50 for brushes from polaris. but nothing wrong with the whole starters either.

 

DB Electrical.......I've purchased a few starters from them and have had no problems.
