Rear wheel hub bolt size and thread
#1
I crashed my 2000 sp 500 and ended up stripping one of the bolts out of the rear bearing carrier (the one that goes through the bottom a-arm into the wheel hub). Does anyone know what the stock size and thread is? I will probably helicoil it.
Thanks,
Jim

Just looked the bolt up on Cycle Parts Warehouse shows bolt to be 7/16- 14 pitch by 2.75" length!(at least on later 2003 model, doesn't show the size on the 2000 model 500 but should be the same) Plus a time sert is much better than a helicoil, but expensive on the tool kit. Also shows GR5 on the bolt which if its means grade 5 should be the cause of all the ones I had with bolts backing out and breaking!
! Try to find a grade 8 bolt! Plus loctite all the other bolts! OPT

Yea,the 7/16- 14 pitch bolts!
I guess if they had gone much bigger than this it would have put too much stress on the bearing carrier and the whole carrier could crack. They would have to make the whole in the steel spacer larger and would probably wear out quicker. They finally got it right on the 850 and went below the middle of the carrier and had a bolt going through the carrier assembly with a nut on the other side!
