Crankshaft rebuilding
#1
I have a 2004 sportsman 700 and i was looking for parts to rebuild my crankshaft and also was wondering if these bikes were known for breaking connecting rods. and also do they make better connecting rods

Welcome to the forum! Yes they are known for breaking connecting rods! I've got a great looking rod and and piston hanging on my tool box as a memento that I pulled off a 700 crankshaft that just curled open the rod end!. Don't know off hand who might offer replacement rods. Every crank I got a hold of that had slung rods were too far gone to consider trying to find aftermarket parts. I had to order complete crankshaft assemblies. You might research a little further, someone may offer that service now on the 700s.. OPT

I had a couple from early 2002 models and one from a 2003 700. I always thought it might have had something to do with the old Ducati ignition system ,but since you have a 2004 and probably have the Kokusan ignition, this kinda shoots down my theory. Never had a problem with the later ones, don't know if the rods/bearings were strengthened. OPT

trust me i can barley be able to afford working on them let alone own one. and also being a old redneck my self you should see the looks i get from the people when i work on there car. they just dont get why you need a gallon of sweet tea on your tool box to work on a car.
