Cool 2000 arctic cat 300 electrical issues

I’m working on a 2000 arctic cat 300 atv and it has some major electrical issues. The owner said it started running really ruff and then he smelled something burning. What I have found is that the voltage regulator has melted. Does anybody know what would cause this?
