Default 06 800 sportsman loud knock and no power

Riding a full weekend, stalled out and i cranked it up its now louder than the normal polaris knock little power. I hate the thought of tearing down my engine myself and will have to get it in the shop so I can use it over new years. Is there something I can do ahead of time to check?? oil is clean, i did go thru some water but nothing deep, barely mid or upper part of the rim. All i can think of is possibly coming up the exhaust but the oil is clean/dark not milky. It cranks and runs though I have done that once in that hopefull way to see if it went away over a week ha, no chance.

Thanks, my baby is sick and I have many things to do to her before that weekend. but no engine and it doesnt matter what else I do.

Hope it's just a piston slap and not the crank or rod bearing problem. If the oil is clean and not contaminated about the only thing I think you can do is pull the valve cover and check that the rocker arms are tight and not causing the problem.Plus all the gears that run off the crank shaft: counter balancer, cam, oil pump could be causing problems, but the ones I've had break just locked up the engine. Worn clutches can make noise and cause problem, but I might be just fishin' on this one to. Keep us updated. OPT

Thanks OPT, i took off the belt cover when it started thinking a belt and stuff was slapping around the clutch. Probably the simplest fix but of course the belt was fine. Hopefully ill get it naked this week and see what I find.

One more thing, the shop wanted the plastics on so they can take them off and charge me. Is there any good reason I cant take them off myself to save the labor cost of it?? Is it a safety thing for them?? or just money maker?

Thanks

A lot of shops want the plastic on,plus seats, etc so they can test ride, but I kind enjoyed it if one was brought in stripped down that I had less work to do on I'd sit on the air box and frame if I had to! Don't just stop at the belt, remove the front clutch and crank it up! You can tell if it's the clutch or an engine noise problem real quick! OPT
