First problem I just got my quad back today from getting my 440 big bore kit and I was running it in my garage and it started smoking. Is this suppose to happen? Second I thought that maybe there was no oil in it so I check and it was a little low and needed to be changed and when I went to unscrew the drain plug it was on extremely tight. On the oil resivoir. And before I knew it BANG the whole thing emptied in about 3 seconds. The neck that the drainplug is screwed into totally broke off. I am now in the process of putting High temp Jb weld to try to fix it. Is this a bad idea? Does anyone have or know where I can get another one cheap?

 

If it is smoking then you are burning oil. Only two ways well maybe three of oil getting into combustion chamber to be burned. You have a broken/stuck piston ring or a bad valve stem seal. If it smokes all the time then its the ring. If it smokes only at startup for a minute or so then it bad valve stem seals. If your very lucky the motor just needs some break in time for the rings to seat against the cylinder, but that's a real long shot. Good luck.

 

One other possibility is that when an engine is put back together, the piston and cylinder are coated lightly with oil. This will smoke for a short time on the initial startup. It should go away soon after running.

The rest is just as getoutofmyway said. Good luck on the jb weld. I dont know how well that will work.... Let us know..

 

I wouldn't recommend the JB Weld. Bite the bullet and buy a new reservoir.

 

Buy a new res. there is a company out there that makes them and they have holes through the res. to help cool the oil down it also holds an extra court of oil have a have one and i like it.

 

Jb weld is awesome, last year the engine on my riding mower blew up and it sent the connecting arm through the crank case making a sizeable hole, i put the thing back together and put JB weld over the hole, it worked great and never leaked. but i don't know how it would work on an ATV with all the bumps and jarring, use the Jb weld for a short time to get you up and running untill you get a new one

 

when my counterbalancer put a hole in my case my dad and i made a little piece of aluminum with holes in it and stuck it in there then we covered it with JB weld. it works like it was brand new. the holes where so that it would leek through so it would be connected on both sides and stronger.

 

The company that makes the rezzie with cooling holes in it is Pingry's. It is a higher capacity one and Dirt Wheels said it makes 400s run 12 degrees cooler. That's the first thing i'm getting when I get my 400.
