ok before i get to tearing it down i need some help troubleshooting....

i was pulling my friend out in reverse and all of a sudden we heard a pop and then a backfire but the backfire isnt the problem.

low and high gear work just fine but when i put it in reverse it registers on my console (R) but when you throttle it doesnt move backwards

any suggestions or like matters would be greatly helped in my case.

You could have snapped a gear or internal chain. The only way for sure to tell is to tear the gear case down. There are a lot of gears,two chains,plus numerous other things that could have happened.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse
There is the outer quadrant gear selector parts that you could check out first to see if this area is the problem on reverse and not an internal gear case problem. (items 46 through 56 which is behind the cover #51.) If no teeth are broken from the ratchet pawl,etc,then more than likely the gear case will have to be split.

 

Got to thinkin' again(I know it's dangerous when I do), but does it try to move at all in reverse?? It could be limiting because of the speed limiter on the gear case or gear position switch malfunction even if its registering on the speedo or the speedo itself ?? Could be the source of the pop and backfire and may not be a mechanical problem?? Just fishing again.
