How's the battery and connections? Has to have 12 volts for the fan and lights. Check that you're charging 14-14.5 volts to the battery at an idle or a little above. If you are charging, then could be a battery cell shorting out. These are the first things I'd check.

Default thanks for your time

thanks for your time on the reply. the only way the headlights, tail lights and fan are connected is thru the battery? the positive post is disconected..., the bike still fires right up on the pull cord but nothing else is working as discribed. you think the battery could cause all these issues.

Why do you have the + post disconnected? You're not able to complete the circuit that charges back to the battery. You can start it without a battery because the ignition is magneto triggered(like a lawn mower) and the battery is mainly for the electrical components, lights, fan, awd, speedo, etc. All you're doing is just getting erratic voltage from the stator which won't allow the fan to operate along with in many cases light bulbs that can blow out because of spikes, plus you can cause damage to ignition system and other components.

I'm assuming you have a 400? 500? (you didn't say) Once the battery is hooked just turn the key on and check the lights. If they don't work, then you've probably burnt a bulb. As far as the fan if you have an older model with the radiator sensor at the top of the radiator, you can pull the two wires and jump across these two wires with needle nose pliers with the key on. The fan should turn on. If not,you could have a faulty fan motor. On the later models with the enclosed fan you can pull the fan wire connections and apply 12 volts(from a good charger or jump to the battery) to the red/white wire and ground(brown) to see if the fan works. Plus make sure the fan blades are not caked with mud. If every thing works, just crank it up,leave the radiator cap off and see if the fan cycles on and off, then top off the coolant. Plus make sure you're charging at least 14 volts back to the battery while running,if you have a meter.

Then I would check the left control switch wiring and connectors that go down into the harness that wraps under the steering area up into the lights. Possible wiring short or left control switch contact problem. Also pull the connectors on the control switch and clean and use some dielectric grease on them. The engine has to warm up to operating temp before the fan can come on. Since the fan works hooking up direct,if it doesn't kick on after warming up the main problem(normally) is the radiator temp sensor. What year model Scrambler 500 if you can be more specific??
