Default 02 Scrambler 50 whining noise

Okay, had a thread about this little guy back in December. Bought it as a no-start to fix for my son for Christmas.
Previous owner said he was told it was a stator. So I found a stator/coil/starter kit. Installed stator and coil. Still no spark. Found the kill switch was bad. Might have been the only thing the whole time.

So, in summary, this ATV has the following new parts:

Stator
Coil
Plug
Carb
Air filter
Fuel Filter

Runs really well. However, I noticed it whining last week. Sounds like it has a supercharger, or an old Pete Jackson gear drive they used to put in V-8's. It's pretty loud. My stethoscope hears it the worst right over the hole where the stator fan is. Fan doesn't seem to be rubbing, although that'd be a logical explanation. I haven't removed the plastic cover over the stator to see if the noise stops.

But, any thoughts of what else could make this noise?

About the only other thing I can find wrong with the ATV is that it seems to take a bit too many RPM's to get it moving. Goes fine once it starts, just seems like it revs too high before engaging. Don't know if that'd be related to the noise or not. It's still running fine, otherwise.

Just pull the plastic cover, crank it up and see if the fins on the stator were causing the noise. I'd check the belt/clutches for wear.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

Finally got to it yesterday.

Pulled the cover....noise gone. I need to look at the cover more closely, but at first glance, I didn't see where the fins had been rubbing, which I thought was odd.

So it sounds fine now, but still seems to have to rev up a bit too much before it gets moving...and it does feel like it's slipping a bit before it finally engages and starts really moving, so I guess some clutch service is in the works.

Looking at that parts link, doesn't seem the entire clutch assy is available. It says "call us". I searched around, and everyone seems to use the exact same parts format, and they all say "call us".

Is there much to rebuilding it? Doesn't look like it, but I've never done it so can't hurt to ask.

Possible that you just need a new belt.

Going to put a belt on it if I ever get the darn thing.

Ordered from PartsZilla. Starting to think that was a mistake, it's been a week and they haven't even shipped it, yet.

Finally got the parts. Can't say I'd recommend PartsZilla. Never one bit of communication from them that wasn't initiated by me. Called and held for 20+ minutes, lady told me part of the order had shipped. No mention of that on my order status section of their site.

Anyway....Got the belt on, and I have a question. It doesn't seem very tight. It's not adjustable, is it? The way I put it on, I took off the front pulley. Checked the little pulley weights and cleaned them. Took a socket that would fit over the shaft, put it through the belt which was already around the back pulley, put the socket on the shaft and slid the belt up on there, then put the outer half of the pulley on. Haven't started it yet, but it just seems awfully loose. Is is supposed to?

You've installed it the right way, have to take off the front pulley half. Hard part is to make sure all splines line up correctly as you hold the pulley, claw washer and cup up against the belt when you impact the nut back on. The belt should be fairly tight. Try it out and see how it does.

I reinstalled it, making sure both sets of splines were on....the star piece and the kick start piece.

Belt is decently snug at first, or if I rotate the motor a time or two. I do notice that if I squeeze the belt, the rear pulley halves spread apart and let it go loose....but if I then rotate the engine they move back together and snug it back up.

Is that normal?

And happy 4th, everyone!

Just drive it and see how it does. If it's no better than before, you may need to check into the rear clutch for any wear items since you said the front clutch parts look ok. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse
