Exclamation HELP!!! 1992 TRX250X wont start!!!

So the day before yesterday i bought a TRX250X with a TRX300X engine and wiring harness, and the guy said the voltage regulator was bad. So i hooked up the "bad" regulator and arced the solenoid to turn it over with jumper cables. It wouldn't start, so i took the spark plug out and checked for spark and it didn't have consistent spark. So when i got it, it had the on/off wires twisted together (red wire and a black w/ white stripes wire), so i cut them down a little bit and stripped them and then twisted them again and it had spark. Then one of my friends came over and we tried starting it and it would fire but not start. So i swapped the plug wires and coil and still wouldn't start and we burnt that coil up. So we tried push starting it and it wanted to but it didn't. So i left it at his house for the night so he can clean the carb. Then today we swapped the cdi boxes from a TRX300X fourtrax 4x4 and it fit, and then a little starting fluid and some choke it started right up. Then it stopped. We traced it back to the on/off wires, it will fire when the black wire is on a hot wire (positive), but: it only fires when he pulls it off the hot wire. Can someone please help?!?! Its not the stator cuz it ran and we cleaned it. We think its something to do with that black on/off wire.

ok, the black wire is coming from the connector to the CDI unit.
