Default 2002 Polaris Sportsman Speedometer Cluster Electrical Question

This question is about a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 700 that I recently purchased.

When I turn the key on it takes roughly 30 seconds for the gauges to come on. When they do the battery light flashes and the speedometer needle light flashes.

It had an issue with a bad regulator and weak battery. I was seeing anywhere from 12v to 17v testing pins 1 to 8 or 2 to 8 while running.

I have fixed that (new battery and voltage regulator) and it now shows 14.4v from pins 1 to 8 and 13.9-14v from pins 2 to 8. But it still takes about 30 seconds for the gauges to come on (for anything to light up on the speedo) and the battery light still flashes as well as the speedometer needle flashing.

The cover on the speedo was cracked. Looked like the last owner sealed it up with super glue. I have taken it apart and cleaned everything. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction of what I can do to fix this without buying a new $350 speedo unit.

The bigger problem other than a cracked speedo could be the ignition system itself. If it still has the Ducati ignition,I wouldn't spend any more $ on this and up grade to the Kokusan ignition kit. Search 700 ignition problems and you'll see the problems this system can cause. Here's a link to the update kit instructions. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...,d.aWM&cad=rja

Thanks for the info.

$500+ for the upgrade kit is more than I have to spend on the quad right now. But I will keep that in mind going forward.

I completely understand, but don't ride alone as this system can quit at any time.I've had several at the shop and several posts on the forum about people that just routinely killed the atv and later it didn't start back up!

Yup, understood. I use the atv at some property I have. No where I can't walk out of then come back with the older Quad Runner 250 to pull this one out.

Another question, I had a great experience with a new stator from RMStator on my snowmobile. I happened to think of them today and took a quick look at what they offer for the sportsman.

Do you have any experience with this kit? Half the price of the polaris kit, I know it isn't replacing the stator, but they made it sound like the AC part of the stator is what fails/breaks (or the AC ignition system). Is that true?

Had one guy already that used this and had some problems. What I don't like about this kit is that it uses the charging circuit from the Ducati stator for the ignition system since the wiring is somewhat stronger. The main problem with this is I've had the charging side of Ducati stators go out also, even before we knew about the update kits that replaces everything including the stator and flywheel. To me it's just a cheap bypass. May work for some, but if the stator goes out what do you do as there are no more Ducati stators from Polaris and you are taking a chance on used ones on Ebay! I'd save my money and buy the Kokusan kit.
