My 1996 Polaris sportsman is having transmission problems. I have adjusted the linkage and the idol with no change. There is also water in the gear oil so I'm thinking the trans needs to be gone threw but would like to see if anyone out there may have a good used trans for sale.

Does it shift into any gear? If it locks up could be a worn shift box, plus if you have water in the tranny change the fluid. Use Polaris AGL.

Yes it will go into low high and reverse but sounds like stripped gears and will not pull in any gear.

Might want to check the clutches and belt out if you haven't already.

I looked at it and it seems to be fine.

Then if you've eliminated everything including the shift box might be cheaper just to repair yours. We seldom had a problem on these tough transmissions at the shop, but just depends on how its been treated over the years.

I'm not sure about the shift box tho. I do kno that the neutral light stays on all the time not sure if this means anything to you but just thought is throw that out there to.

I'm quite certain it hasn't been treated very well in the past but I'm trying to straighten everything out that the kid I bought it from blotched up.

Neutral light staying on is because of a faulty gear position switch in the shift box. This too was a common problem. Before you start taking the tranny out, remove the linkage from the shift box and see if you have a lot of back and forth play on the shift lever.Too much play from worn parts can make it hard to get positive gear engagement. Plus you can use a pair of vice grips on the transmission shift levers to see if the gears fully engage.May still be shift box related. While linkage is removed and shift lever in neutral, adjust the linkage ends to where they drop straight in the shift box levers with no resistance and see how it does.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse
