Default Pulling Transmission on 1996 Sportsman 500

Ok I have done everything my manual said to do up to the last step. It says to pull back on the transmission to disengage form the drive shaft going to the front axles. Is there some kind of trick to it. There is hardly any room to maneuver this thing..how far back is the transmission supposed to move before it disengages? Am I supposed to be putting some sort of lubricant or something on the shaft? Any advice would be appreciated

Better off just knocking out the pin in the front prop shaft u-joint,then driving the prop shaft back into the transmission shaft a little until it's clear of the front diff. Then you can drive the prop shaft off the transmission shaft and out of the machine completely.BEST if you have an air chisel with a dull bit to save your hands. Hard to align this prop shaft back up with the transmission when it's ready to be reinstalled and also align the mounting points of the transmission back up at the same time. The manual's trying to take the easy way to get the transmission out,but on this procedure it's really wrong.
