Default 1996 Polaris Sportsman 500 Running Rough

Hi all,

My name is Bob and I recently received this ATV. I stripped it down, had the carb cleaned & rebuilt, changed oil & filter, changed fuel filter, completely drained and cleaned fuel tank, replaced spark plug, etc...

I never heard this machine run before I got it. I got it for nothing. After getting it all back together it started right up with no problems. I was riding it around a little bit and it was running ok. It was backfiring a little bit here and there. The biggest issue was when I would give it lots of throttle and let off quickly the machine would die out, stall, or backfire.

The guy who rebuilt the carb told me to take the slack out of the throttle cable. It did seem to have slack in it. I tightened up the slack a little and it was running better, until it backfired again. Now it wants to stall as soon as I give it any throttle. I checked the plug and it seems fine. I'm not sure how to really adjust the throttle cable (distance between contacts?) I've been back and forth with the adjustment and I can't get anywhere. I'm posting a video of my problem. Hopefully I do it right. Thanks so much in advance, and I look forward to chatting on this forum.

Bob

Pull the cam cover and see if the exhaust lobe is ground down. This was the most common problem on back firing,no power to the engine. If worn it needs to be replaced along with the exhaust rocker arm. Here's an example from another poster.http://forums.atvconnection.com/pola...d-cam-pic.html
