Default speedo quit

last week I put new pads on front and rear of my 07 500 EFI but didn't test ride it. All was good last time out. Today I had to get it out to plow and noticed at some point the speedo needle was not registering. Display is working correctly, AWD working fine, The only other symptom is while in reverse you must hold the overdrive button regardless of speed when backing up or the rev limiter kicks in. Is there something I may have knocked out of alignment or disturbed when swapping out the new pads or just a strange coincidence that the hall effect sensor went out? I've checked the sensor and the plug at the back of the speedo and looks good. no pulled wires at hall effect. I was gentle so as not to damage the wiring to the sensor but may have anyway. How much distance should there be between the disc and the sensor? Without an official measurement I'd say there is 1/8" to 3/16" spacing. How can I test the sensor? And any ideas on whether or not I've missed something? Not a huge deal to not have the speedo but I would like to have it right especially before get down to Hatfield McCoy this in April. If for some reason (which I doubt) it's the speedo itself I'll live with it. Not dropping a few hundred on a new one as long as everything else works fine.

Not uncommon for the sensor to fail. I replaced quite a few over the years.Could be just coincidence. As far as the reverse over ride, limiter is built into the speedo.Could just be a wiring problem, dirty connectors to the left control switch,or the left control switch itself. Some guy posted this as a way of just eliminating the over ride button.

Have the reverse over ride done for plowing through a toggle. And use the factory over ride for everyday use. Both work fine. In reverse now even at a crawl of maybe 2mph the rev limiter is kicking in. Before the speedo problem today I could back up at 5-7mph before it would kick in. Are the 2 linked in a way that the rev limiter is engaging because the hall effect sensor may not be working properly. And is there an easy way of testing the sensor. I suspect it's the problem for both issues as both problems showed up at the same time.

We used a static harness tester for the sensor at the shop to tell if it was good or bad.Manual doesn't show any resistance tests on the sensor wiring. Speedo does have the awd and over ride system built into it. Bad idea.. Problem could be hall effect sensor related since it happened at the same time, but it's about 40 something bucks to find out.

ok thanks OPT. At $40 just to find out I might as well just buy the new sensor. If not the problem I'll have a spare for when one fails which will happen sooner or later I'm sure.

Got the new sensor in and everything's back to working right. I don't recall on the older sportsmans but the newer ones or at least the EFI's like mine do have the reverse rev limiter tied into it. I also noticed the ADC wasn't working and now it's back. Gotta wonder why in the world they would tie so much into one little sensor/speedometer. Golly Gee whiz Professor why cant stuff just be simple like in the old days?

Reverse limiter, awd, etc built into the speedo from about 2000 models on. Sorry idea.. Some of your erratic action could be because of the small brown/white ground wire on the front diff itself.Ground wire has to go through the awd switch, speedo and down to the diff. Try a jumper from the brown white at the front diff to the main ground at the coil or at a good frame ground and see if this helps. Same thing a lot of Sportsman 500s,etc have been going through on the hub activated awd system. Some even jump the brown white wire at the speedo(if the speedo is dead) to a brown wire bypassing the speedo entirely. Here's how one guy solved his Sportsman 500 problem on the hub awd system.

That's a good thing to know for everyone OPT. What was funny with mine before I fixed the sensor was the 4x4 still worked flawlessly but the rev limiter, and the Active,Decent,Control was out due to that stupid sensor, I've said it many times before. Its just plain goofy how things are designed sometimes ATV,cars you name it. I still have my 01 Cummins for that reason. It's reliable easy to work on and diagnose if an issue pops up, not a whole lot of electronics to deal with, unlike my wife's new car. no way I'm gonna touch it with a 10' pole.

Guess I shouldn't tell you about what's in the pdm module either, but I will.. Makes the speedo sound simple compared to it..

1 Regulator control module for charging
2 main circuit breaker
3 Starter lock out control
4 Temperature controller
"Plus has some other internal protection components"
5 Battery protection
6 Light relay
7 Accessory power
8 Starter protection
9 Hot indicator
10 Fan

Whew, for a second there I thought it had something to do with a wardrobe malfunction....
