2002 sportsman 700 stuck in low gear

Default 2002 sportsman 700 stuck in low gear

tried unhooking linkage, still cannot budge shift lever, took shifter cover off can not turn shift lever , any ideas ?

If pulling down on the lock out detent spring doesn't help,you might try rocking the atv back and forth and try to get the shift lever moving.If this still doesn't help,then check the sub assembly gears especially #60- 63 on the parts break down. I've had problems there if the factory grease is contaminate and gears are rusty.If these gears are ok,then it could be the strange wide shift forks and wave springs this transmission uses(19,20) that can cause problems with this transmission on locking up.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

ok thanks i will try it tomorrow and let you know , i have an exploded view of gear box so i can see parts u mean .

Be careful on any disassembly of these gears as they are indexed at certain points. Gears are not marked. Best if you have a manual on this model that shows you step by step. If you don't have one,here's one for 5 bucks.https://www.tradebit.com/usr/tradema...pairManual.jpg

thanks opt , figured out my problem, no tranny fluid, it shifts good now i hope i didnt do too much damage. there was very minor shavings on magnetic drain plug and i poured a litre of tranny fluid through it before i refilled it with synthetic. i did purchase manual on line, thanks again. randy

If it works ok,then you're very lucky on this! Look over the manual as to all other service needed and fluids required..
