Default 91 polaris 350 doesn't like water

hello every one!
i just picked up an old trail boss and the machine runs great! but the problem i am having is whenever i hit a decent sized puddle with any speed the washout kills the engine and it wont restart until it sits for a couple days and dries out?
i've seen these bikes online taking some pretty huge swamps, what i'm wondering is are these bikes moded at all in order to do this? or is there somthing wrong with my machine?
thanks

Gotta be splashing up into the electronics or grounding out in the plug cap area. All it takes also is just a small bare spot on the plug wire to short to ground. I'd check the plug cap and wire for cracks/splits,plus pull the electrical connections and use electrical grease.

is it ok to use dielectric grease on low voltage wiring? i read it can act as an insulator until it warms up.

Don't just glob it on,a small coating on connector pins is good enough to help make them more moisture resistant. Nothing really helps if you swamp one.You just have to pull every thing, blow out all the moisture and hope nothing gets shorted out.
