Default Speedo quit working

Have a 1996 Polaris sportsman 500 600 + miles. Noticed the speedo was not working. Tried a search but nothing for this older model. Looked at cheap part diagram but did not see anything to check. Any help appreciated. Was working 2 days ago.

Cable driven speedo driven off the gear case. 95% of the time it's the small "key" that breaks inside the gear case adapter that's the problem. You can first unhook the cable at the gear case, place in neutral with the rear wheels of the ground and turn the wheels. If the inside of the adapter doesn't turn, the key is broken. Plus you can see if the cable might be frozen from the gear case to the speedo. That's the other common thing that can happen. Item #44 is the key. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Polaris, Suzuki & Kawasaki OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse They aren't cheap. Here's one on ebay.3280217 Polaris | eBay

Thanks I will check it out. This one has nothing to do with the AWD as the others do correct since it is manual not electric?
