Never had them side-by side or anything, but my impression from a short ride would be the 400 would be fairly close performance-wise to the non HO 500. The HOs I have seen will walk away from them. Not enough saddle time to be able to say much more.

A buddy of mine just got a 2001 Sportsman H.O. That thing is fast for a big *** machine like that. It bury's the speedo on the road. And it reads 60. I think it will do about 63. Acclerates very quickly. Its a tank. I just dont like the front shocks. They give too much when turning.

Anyone know about the sportsman 400. Being a 4 stroke and only a 400 makes me skeptical about the speed and acceleration of the machine. How fast is it?

My new Sportsman 400 runs great. I didn't want to spend the extra money for the 500 and I was not disappointed. It runs pretty quick. I had to 45 on a dirt road and it was still pulling but I ran out of room. I really was pleased with mine today. Ran with a Magnum 500 and 2 Explorers. They were faster but when we hit the deep mud I had no problems with getting stuck like they did. Plenty of power to pull me through. The 500 is nice but I just didn't need it. If you want speed buy the Scrambler 500 4wd and that is not a big issue the Sportmans are great machines as well.

It,s really a 425 Sportsman so the power should be good.

Although I dont have the sp400, I have the expedition 425. Suppose to be the same motor. I've had mine around 53, says the speedo. I'm not sure how the auto vs gears, effects overall speed.
I'm not a speed freek, but with the gears I'm able to wind er up a bit if necessary. I keep up with all of the other quads I ride with, all makes and models.
