2013 Honda Foreman top end
#1
A few months ago I checked my oil before going on a ride. Apparently I cross-threaded my dipstick and after busting a few mud holes I must have got junk in my engine. Started blowing bluish white smoke on acceleration and smelled like oil burning. Did an oil change and my filter was nasty at 300 miles since last change. Pulled top end and replaced rings and piston. Had the cylinder bored by a local cycle shop. Ran new oil in it twice for 15 minutes and then did oil changes. Went on a 40 mike ride last week and by the end of the day it was smoking the same way again. Called the cycle shop to see what they would charge to do a top end rebuild and they said $650. However, they said they can’t guarantee it unless they open up the bottom half and clean all of that. This would be a total of $2200!! 😳. So question is, am I just gonna have to eat $2200 or is this an insane price?

Sounds expensive to me, but a total engine stripdown is the biggest job on an ATV. I think I would be taking the cylinder off to check what is going on, those oil scraper rings are delicate on the 500, all too easy to have one come out when you re-fit the cylinder, and it may have been wiser to have removed and stripped the oil pump, as the only other reason I can see for another failure is either a worn pump or a blocked sump strainer. Strainer removal would require a total stripdown. Another option is a used engine, however pre 2007 gearboxes were faulty, 90% have had the gears changed for later, better gears, but you don't want to fit another engine and find it jumps out of gear.
Sorry, scrub that "fit another engine", just remembered 2012 and 13 models had the new engine with water cooling, so would be expensive, if you could find one.
