Default Burning wire while starting

Hello all,
I have a 2002 Eton Yukon YXL 150. I can shift from F,N,R and the correct light turns on. The brake light works. When I went to start the quad the light jumped form neutral to forward and a wire heated up and melted the insulation. The wire runs from a 4 pin connector on the left to in front of the shift lever on the right. I would like to fix the quad so I may donate it to a Horse rescue place where I volunteer. Any ideas would be apprciated.

Thank you,
Ken

Sounds like a bad main earth cable to engine from battery or frame. If so, the neutral wire could then be turned into the main earth for the starter, overloading it.
