After rocking the quad back and forth while in gear I am now able to start it. When shutting it off and trying to start again, the same issue arises at times. What might it be?

By "no light" are you referring to the neutral light or brake light? Whichever, there is either a break in a wire in that circuit or a faulty switch or, if it has one, a relay not working properly.
