Electrical issues 98 foreman 400
#1
Hello all. Ive read several threads here about electrical issues but none seem to be the same as im experiencing. My speedo shows im moving setting still, same with odometer and the bike will eventually loose power all together and die. Ive always been able to start it back, after it sets a bit by pull starting it. Ideas?

I rarely see an old model 400 these days, but some of the later, digital speedos do read speeds when sat in neutral, usually below 10mph and varies with revs. Fist thing to check is voltage at the battery, should be between 13v and 14.5v with the engine running, no matter what the revs are, if it goes over 15v you need a new regulator. If that is OK, change the plug. Won't alter the speedo but may be the cause of the engine stalling. However the engine fault could be anywhere in the ignition or fuel system.
Check the tank vent isn't blocked, When the fault is on, a sucking sound if you undo the filler cap, followed by an instant re-start, indicates a blocked vent.
Try disconnecting the speedo, could be an internal short is taking the power from the ignition system.
