Default 2002 Sportsman 500 timing problem

Ok Polaris professionals. I have an ‘02 Sportsman 500 that lost the cam. I have the new cam installed and my mechanic buddy has reset the timing 3 times. We have lined up all the Mark’s and it did start this last time, but only when we held the throttle about 1/2 way. As soon as you let off the throttle it dies.

Can anyone give me a sure fire way to get it right? This bike is fun to ride and I want to get it going again. I have several bikes to ride but this one needs to be running if it wants to stay in the garage.

As long as you have all the timing done correctly then the next thing is valve clearance.006 for both intake and exhaust
I just did it on mine 02 sportsman 500 Freedom edition
