Default Hall effect sensor

I know the speed sensor is is called a hall effect sensor but is it really? A true hall sensor relies on a magnet for the signal, is there a magnet embedded in the brake rotor? I am on an other electronics forum asking similar question and they are saying this sensor is actually called a reluctance sensor if it is simply sensing the holes in the rotor. The point of all this is that I need new one, ebay has both types that could be adapted to fit for around 4 bucks. It would be near $100.00 for me to get the proper one up here in canada.
