K&N Filter kit problems on 1999 Sportsman 500
#1
Put on K&N filter kit, replaced main jet and needle, bike idles fine but when you give it full throttle it dies. It seems to get to much air. Put plastic cover over half of filter and it runs fine. Not to sure if new needle is positioned correctly. Followed directions but they weren't to clear on this. Anybody have any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.

Bevlaur,
You are running too lean.
Remove the plastic cover on the air filter. Pull the sparkplug and see what color (read) the ceramic tip is. It should be tan-to-brown. If it is white or light gray, you are running too lean. If it is lean raise the needle, one slot at a time. Be sure you adjust the air jet also. I would turn it in until it stops ( very lightly) then out 1 to 1 1/4 turns.
Make a run, check the plug.
Good luck

I had the same problem with my scrambler. The settings they give in the k&n power kit aren't right. I had to play with it for a couple days to get it right. They said to turn the air fuel screw out 4 turns. I ended up at 1 1/4 turns. Good luck.
