Bought used Tao 110cc for my son - what should I do first
#1
Hi all,
im new to the forum as i just bought a used 110cc quad for my son. I think it’s a Tao, but don’t really know how to tell. It runs and drives ok but the brake switch isn’t working and when it’s connected the bike stops running. The previous owner has been wrenching on it and replaced the carb, and did some body repairs and painted the frame but it’s still a bit rough. Just wondering what I should do to it first? Was figuring I’d change the oil and have already ordered a new brake switch. But the brakes aren’t great despite lots of pad, and you have to Rev it a lot to get it moving. Also the steering is a bit wayward.
Open to any suggestions or opinions. Thanks

Yes change oil. Make sure the oil does not look like it has any gas in it. If it does you will need to replace needle valve in carb. Oil chain if it looks like it needs it. The break switch controls ignition also so if it is bad it won't run. It's like a kill switch safety feature. Not sure on steering would need more info. Maybe tie rods need adjusted. Change air filter. Giving it alot of throttle to move sounds like a clutch issue. I think you can adjust them some. Mine if on the left side same as chain. Make sure you grease all the grease points also. Check your bushings. Maybe have worn out on the front causing steering issues also. Just a thought.

Thanks for the response. Is there a recommended type of oil and quantity? With a used machine there are no manuals or anything. Also have read about changing the plug to an NGK. Specific plug and gap? Or does it depend on what’s in it? Oddly, with one of the wires to the brake switch disconnected, it runs fin. But if it’s connected it won’t run.
Will check the suspension and clutch as you suggest also.

Not sure on the year. I’ll try to get a better look at the date of manufacture if it’s still there. I’d guess maybe 2010, just based on the square body style. How much oil will it take? Thanks for the spark plug info
