taotao 20v lithium battery upgrade?
#1
Howdy,
new here. So long story short, is their any critical electrical components on a 110CC taotao that would likely be fried by swapping in a 20v lithium tool battery in place of the 12v lead acid. I have a million ready to use. I know its completely different but my sons powerwheels runs exclusively off 20v tool batteries (for the past year)...it hasn't fried and its even cheaper than a taotao.
Disclaimer: I understand it wont charge correctly. It will have a quick disconnect so I will periodically remove it and charge as normal.
Thank you in advance for any insight.

It will more than likely fry everything, Possibly get damaged if it does work by over charging as with tool battery's the charger ***** off when charged and on a machine it will not. Powerweheels are totally different and have been upgraded and modded for years.
Not really something i would want to experiment with when my kids *** is on the seat

I suspect it may work but will fry the voltage regulator and probably blow the light bulbs if it has any. I'm no electrician but think a 6v bulb in series in the line from battery to fuse may fix this, but it still might blow the reg and wont, as you already stated, charge properly.

Thought I would log in and update this. I ended up using a 20v Porter cable battery with a connector off amazon. It has worked flawlessly for almost a year now. Has not damaged the battery, never seem to go dead and the quad has NEVER started quicker.
Just to be clear, I am not recommending the modification to anyone…but is has worked out swimmingly for me.

Interesting, it may be an idea to check the voltage across the battery with engine running. Voltage regs limit the voltage from alternator to battery at 14.5v so one would expect it to assume the battery is fully charged and stop any charging, unless the battery got down to that voltage, so fairly flat for a 20v battery, but who knows?
