Bmx 110 no start
#1
Hello guys! I just picked up a used mini quad from a garage sale. It's a bmx 110 chain drive loncin motor with the remote killswitch. I bought it in no start condition. The starter chain was off the starter so I fixed that and I also bought and installed a new handlebar killswitch/start controller. Still no start. Battery is good. Getting voltage to the pins for the new controller and key/ignition switch. But I'm at a lost from there. I dont have a wiring diagram or where to start diagnosing. Any help would be appreciated! Btw I can bump the starter and it will fire and run.

Most ATVs have to be in neutral or have a brake on for the starter to work, have you tried this? If there is a fault, start at the solenoid, if it clicks when you press the start button but the starter doesn't turn, either the solenoid or starter is faulty. I check them by putting a high wattage 12v test lamp between the wire going to the starter motor and earth. ignition on, press start button, if solenoid clicks but no light, faulty solenoid, if lamp lights but starter doesn't spin, faulty starter. If solenoid doesn't click, check the two thin wires going to it, one should be pos other neg, when start button is pressed, if one of them isn't, trace that wire back to the fault, if both wires are OK, again you have a faulty solenoid.

Okay so I don't have anything when start button is pressed. No clicks or anything. I can bump the solenoid and the starter will turn but not by the button. I do have 12 volts on one of the relay wires. The other should be a ground? I'll check resistance to battery negative if that's the case. I thought that the other would of been a signal 12v from the starter button.

Kill switches should kill the spark so you have a wiring problem on ignition system. Getting back to solenoid, as I wrote before "check the two thin wires going to it, one should be pos other neg, when start button is pressed." Does the pos need the start button to be pressed to be pos? If so but the neg wire to the solenoid is dead, trace that neg wire back, it may go to the neg wire on battery or it could go to a lock out, again as I wrote above, often the neutral indicator switch (if it has a neutral) or a brake light switch.
Just a guess but the wiring plug you show in the last photo could be the BMX equivalent of the "sink plug" one fitted to Suzukis. Fit a cord onto ring and follow bike about for child's first rides, if he/she looks like getting into trouble, you yank the cord, pulling the plug, which kills the spark.

Do we know what wire should be positive and what should be negative going into the starter solenoid? Bike side I have a Green with red stripe going into yellow with red strip. Then I have a yellow with green stripe running into a green with red stripe. Does that sound right? If the wires are right then I'll just ground the other wire and see if the switched 12 volt will start it.

The two thin wires on the solenoid will work either pos or neg so it doesn't matter what colour they are. On some bikes pos wire comes from start button to solenoid, on others neg one does. You have to test this and then trace the wire that is dead all the time, whether this is pos or neg. Can't help with the dangling black/green. If you find where it goes into the loom, this may give a clue as to what it does.
