Electric Start Won't Work - TaoTao 150
#1
Hey all,
After getting my fuel issues resolved, I'd like to figure out the remaining issue with this quad; the electric start won't work. Quad starts and runs find with jumping the solenoid. I put a new handlebar starter/light assembly on it. The lights work, but starter button won't do anything (no click when pushing it either). The kill switch also doesn't work when the quad is running. All safety switches seem to be in good order. I'm not sure what the issues is other than I possibly got a junk new starter button? Any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated and sorry if there's already a thread for this specific situation, I didn't find it. Thanks in advance!

You could do with a wiring diagram as there are several ways the start circuit can be wired. Most have a lock-out so the bike needs to be either in neutral, or have a brake on, for the starter to work. The thin wires to the solenoid are a pos and a neg, one comes from start button, but may go via the lock-out circuit, the other comes from battery, If it is pos, will come through ignition switch, if neg from battery, possibly via earth. again they may go via the lock-out. So, ignition on, when start button is pressed, one wire should have 12v pos, t'other 12v neg, on it. Whichever hasn't, is faulty (if you have set the lock-out).

Merryman is completely right on how the solenoid works but to rule that solenoid out you should do a continuity check across the smaller wire terminals. If its working properly when testing the wires you should get a tone or a display that they are functioning. If theres no tone you know the solenoid is bad.
